SHORT NOTICES Victorian Imperialism. By C. C. Eldridge, Hodder & Stoughton, 1978. Pp. 248. £ 3.50. At first sight, Dr. Eldridge's book appears to be yet another outline survey of British imperial management and expansion. Though there are brief summaries of most of the main developments, the book is a good deal more useful than this. It is, in fact, a survey for sixth forms and first-year undergraduates of most of the past and recent historiographical arguments about Victorian imperialism. Dr. Eldridge is uniformly polite and his book, perhaps, loses some cutting edge because of this. He gives an exposition of the best points of the various arguments, and this has the advantage of encouraging students to read for themselves. But the con- sequence of this is that the book remains an exposition rather than a critique. Dr. Eldridge's own position may be called 'Robinson and Gallagher revised', giving more emphasis than they appear to do to economic motivation, but the full implications of this are not really spelt out. This is, however, an unpretentious book, which could well fill a teaching gap. H. C. G. MATTHEW Christ Church, Oxford. The editors gratefully acknowledge receipt of the following journals: Ceredigion, VIII, No. 2 (1977). The major article is a discussion by D. L. Baker Jones of C. E. D. Morgan-Richardson, a leading protagonist of the landlords during the controversy over Welsh land in the 1890s, and a minor novelist. R. J. Colyer lucidly describes the enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno, 1813-47, the celebrated Borth bog. Irish Historical Studies, XX, Vol. 80 (September 1977). National Library of Wales Journal, XX, No. 4 (Winter 1978). The major contribution is a fascinating account of Church reconstruction in north Cardiganshire (notably Llangorwen and Elerch) by Ieuan Gwynedd Jones. In the same issue, Richard Colyer provides an account of a visit by a Welsh minister, the Rev. John Hughes, to the 'mud and mosquitoes' of British Guiana in 1847. Revue Romaine d'Histoire, Tome XVII, Vols. I-IV (1978), with articles in French, English, German and Roumanian. Studii si Materiale de Istorie Contemporana. Vol. III: Procesul Revolu- tionar in Romania, 1944-65 (Editura Academiei Republicii Socialiste Romania, Bucharest, 1978). Studies on the post-war revolutionary process.
