ABSTRACT A study based primarily on contemporary local press reports, of the circumstances and local and external influences surrounding the establishment of an Intermediate School in Cardigan, tracing the chronology of primary events from 1890 to the opening of the School's new building in 1898. The complex motives of the town's civic leaders are considered Cardigan was a town in social, political and economic decline at this time and great importance in the context of revitalisation was attached to the task of obtaining an Intermediate School. The major controversy which arose between various religious denominations as a result of appointing an exclusively non-conformist board of managers for the School, and the complexity of establishing a school to serve south Ceredigion and north Pembrokeshire, almost resulted in the abandonment of the campaign.
