NOTES FOR CONTRIBUTORS (1) Contributions should be typed with double spacing and with generous margins on A4 paper. In view of the high cost of production, contributions should be submitted in their final form and a copy retained by the author. The title page of the script should indicate the author's name, address and telephone number together with a good estimate of the number of words in text and footnotes. The subsequent pages should be numbered and carry an identifying running head. If the article can also be presented as an ASCI file on a three and a half inch floppy disk this would assist the production process but will not affect the editor's choice. (2) English spelling conventions should be followed and where Welsh, Latin or other language quotations are inserted they should be accompanied with a translation in the main text. All quotations should be either enclosed in inverted commas or presented as indented paragraphs. All new paragraphs should be clearly indicated by an indention. (3) References should be kept brief and avoid digression. Bibliographical references should be full and accurate. They should be printed at the end of the article and should be numbered consecutively and typed on a separate sheet. Contributors are asked, therefore, to adhere closely to the following preferred forms of reference: (a) A reference to a book should list the author's initials and name, the title of the book underlined for italic, the edition, if not the first; the place of publication and the date should appear in parentheses; volume number in roman capitals and the page number(s) referred to. For example: W. Davies, Wales in the Early Middle Ages (Leicester, 1982), p. 77. F.M. Powicke, The Thirteenth Century (2nd ed., London, 1962), pp. 11-12. T.F. Tout, Chapters in Medieval Administrative History (4 vols., Manchester, 1920), IV, pp. 201-207. Contributions in books should be given thus: E.Bennett, 'Joyce and Shaw', in L. Williams (ed.), James Joyce (London, 1975), ch. 3, p. 58. (b) A reference to an article in a journal should list the author's initials and name, the title of the article in single quotations marks, the name of the journal underlined for italic, the volume number, the date in parentheses and the page number(s). For example: D.T Williams, 'The Port Books of Swansea and Neath', Archaeologia Cambrensis, XCV (1940), p. 194. R.A. Griffiths, 'The Revolt of Rhys ap Maredudd, 1287-88', Welsh History Review, 3 (1967), pp. 133-34. (4) Illustrations are encouraged but they should be used discriminatingly and relate closely to the text. Good quality monochrome photographs and line drawings should be provided. They should be adequately labelled and accompanied by a numbered typewritten sheet showing sequence and captions. All copyright clearance is the author's responsibility and full acknowledgement of sources should be included where appropriate. (5) Corrections to accepted scripts should be kept to a minimum. The editor reserves the right to refuse any extensive alterations to texts in proof and prompt return of proofs is essential. (6) A succinct autobiography in no more than 45 words should also be provided for inclusion in Notes for Contributors.
