Huw MENAI: Born 1887, Caernarvon (of monoglot Welsh Parents). Errand boy newspaper seller, stevedore, navvy, worker in and about the mines in South Wales for many years. (Unemployed for long periods.) Worked for five years during the war among the High Explosives at the Bridgend Arsenal. First organiser in South Wales for the (now defunct) Social Democratic Party. Frequent contributor to early Socialist publications, reviews, and newspapers, The Socialist Review, The Social Democrat, Justice, Labour Leader, etc. Author of Thro' The Upcast Shaft (Hodder & Stoughton), The Passing of Guto (Hogarth Press), Back in the Return (Wm. Heinemann), The Simple Vision (Chapman and Hall). Appears in many Poetry Anthologies. B(ERT) L(EWIS) Coombes Lives at a hill farm near Onllwyn, Glamorgan. Works underground in Glynneath as a colliery repairer and has been doing various mining jobs in that area for thirty years. First book These Poor Hands was written in a bedroom of a miner's cottage on a scrap typewriter. Made a Left Book Club Choice a month before war started and sold about eighty thousand copies in that month. Has had more than two million words published since that date. Last book a Penguin Special-" Miner's Day." One of the New Writing group and a frequent contributor to Fortnightly, Geographical, Picture Post, the various Digests, etc. Trained musician and a hungry reader. Believes that the only way to be realistic in mining writing is to live and work with the miners. It seems that editors agree with that view. Has written documentary plays, documentary films and many radio talks. Much of his work is translated into Russian. Born on a farm and has gone to live at this hill farm to keep his close contact with the land and its people. Married a Resolven girl and reared two children during the lean times of South Wales mining. VERNON Watkins Is 40, and lives in Gower, near Swansea. Author of The Ballad of the Mari Lwyd and The Lamp and the Veil. EDRICA Huws Educated St. Paul's Girls' School and Royal College of Art. Lives at Talwm, Anglesey wife of Richard Ll. Huws, well known Welsh draughtsman and architect contributed to Wales, Winter 1945, and is represented in the Little Reviews Anthology, 1946.
