Congress of Air and Sea AT the pitch of noon the fainting wind Dropped and the sea stirred In sleep, turning to swell her breast Against the weight of her lord. Welded in heat they lay entwined Herring and mackerel Flickered a fanning fin at rest Under the floating gull. The lapping weeds among the rocks Curling their tongues again Licked at wounds the air three nights Had lashed that lapis skin That now bare breathed beneath his arc, Had whipped the weals till she Hurled back the tortured elements, The simulating sea. All life that teamed in her vast womb Shook for three nights and days Carried upon her fury's flood It slepc now in her peace. And he whose bellowing voice was dumb Cooled his burning throat Upon her cheek till vapour hid The gulls that lay afloat. EDRICA Huws.
