in Monk Street to his wife Catherine for her life, then to any of his children as yet unmarried, and then finally to his eldest son Richard (II), to whom he also left a mansion in Llanelen. He divided between his wife and children the named parcels of land "which I hold by lease of 1000 years from Robert Gunter, my father". "I give and bequeath to my grandchildren Mary and Elizabeth, daughters of my son Richard (II), one close or parcel of arable land called Cae yr gwraig containing four acres lying in Llanelen" for a period of twenty-one years, and then to their father Richard (II). Note: Cae yr gwraig did not revert to Richard Gunter (II) because he died some seven years before 1669 when his daughters would have attained the age of twenty-one. But in his Will dated 1 March 1662 (see Milborne 621) Richard (II) devised Cae yr gwraig to Thomas Gunter of the Gunter Mansion in Cross Street, Abergavenny, attorney, named as his executor and administrator, in trust to be sold to raise portions of £ 20 for his daughters when they attained the age of twenty-one. Milborne 667 20 May 1663. An Indenture made between Thomas Gunter of Abergavenny- "Tutor and Guardian of Richard Gunter (III), an infant under the age of twenty-one years, the son and heir of Richard Gunter (II) late of the town of Usk, gent, deceased"-on the one part, and on the other part Llewellen John ap Evan, to whom were to be rented messuages and twenty-four acres of land in the parish of Llanelen, late the property of Richard Gunter (II) the father, for a period of twelve years ("if the said Richard Gunter the infant shall live so long"), paying "unto the said Thomas Gunter-for the use of the said Richard Gunter (III), the infant, the yearly sum of eight pounds". Note: It would seem most likely that the term of twelve years rent was set to be completed when Richard (III) attained the age of twenty-one: in which case we can reckon that he was born in 1654, and was eight years old when his father died. Milborne 1195 1 August 1668. Assignment of a parcel of land called Cay'r Graig in the parish and lordship of Llanelen by Thomas Gunter to Walter Macocke, both of Abergavenny.
