Notes an tbt Qtwt Jiooe of lannarg 20th, 1601. By C. H. JAMES. FEW lines calling the attention of our members to a Reprint a of a rare Tract in our Cardiff Reference Library may be of interest. The title page is as follows 1607 Lamentable newes out of Monmouth shire in Wales Contayning The wonderful and most fearefull accidents of the great ouerflowing of waters in the saide Countye drowning infinite numbers of Cattell of all kinds, as Sheepe Oxen Kine and horses with others together with the losse of of many men women and Children and the Subuersion of xxvi Parishes in January last 1607 Then follows a rude woodcut showing the flood, men and animals in the water, and a church with only a portion of the reef, tower and steeple in sight. It is stated in the Reprint that this curious woodcut of the flood is supposed to be one of the earliest specimens of the xylographic art, now extant.
