THE HISTORY OF THE CARDIFF NATURALISTS' SOCIETY. By A. W. SHEEN. AN ADDRESS GIVEN AT THE DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS OF THE SOCIETY, NOV. 3RD, 1927.* INTRODUCTION. The Society was founded in 1867 and owes its origin to a local desire to promote and help a Cardiff Museum. From very small beginnings that desire to-day stands enshrined in the National Museum of Wales. To that beautiful building and its worthy contents went much loving toil of brain and hand from our Society. To this I shall return, and now let me trace for you our small beginnings in the founding of the Museum. EARLIER MUSEUMS. On May 5th, 1852, the Cardiff Town Council ordered that the coins found in the ruins of the old Workhouse should be sent to the Cardiff Museum." This Workhouse was in St. Mary Street, where the Co-operative Wholesale Society's building now stands, and the Museum, I imagine, was The Cardiff Athenaeum and Mechanics' Institute," situated in High Street at the site of entrance to the present High Street Arcade. This Institute was founded by Dean Conybeare, of Llandaff—a noted geologist-and by Mr. Whitlock H. Nicholl, and contained collections. The Dean left Llandaff in 1856, so we may assume the Institute was founded about 1850. In course of time it ceased to be, and such of its The Address was illustrated by Lantern Slides.
