He was born at Penycae, North Wales, May 10th, 1876. He manifested excep¬ tional musical talent when quite young. He began to play from the sol-fa when a child, and his father taught him to play from the staff nota¬ tion when he was eight. Miss Thomas of Penybryn Hall, RuaboB, took a deep interest in him, and she taught him the piano gra¬ tuitously. After¬ wards she placed him under the tuition of Mr. Hall, the organist of Wynnstay. The good people of Penycae showed their appreciation of him by presenting him with a piano. Between 9 and 11 years of age he won prizes under Mr. W. T. Samuel and Mr. Joseph Cantor. He composed] an excellent piece of music for the Sunday School when he was 12.
