THE. __ aptwt ^ecoxb . No. 113. Vol. 10. AUGUST, 1906. One Penny. 3JKt. §■. 0ro<m gones, 3?,^®,$.., J E have the pleasure of presenting to our readers this month the portrait of one of the best musicians in all Wales. He was born at Penycae, North Wales, May 10th, 1876. He manifested excep¬ tional musical talent when quite young. He began to play from the sol-fa when a child, and his father taught him to play from the staff nota¬ tion when he was eight. Miss Thomas of Penybryn Hall, RuaboB, took a deep interest in him, and she taught him the piano gra¬ tuitously. After¬ wards she placed him under the tuition of Mr. Hall, the organist of Wynnstay. The good people of Penycae showed their appreciation of him by presenting him with a piano. Between 9 and 11 years of age he won prizes under Mr. W. T. Samuel and Mr. Joseph Cantor. He composed] an excellent piece of music for the Sunday School when he was 12.
