and summer grazing management of the sheep appear in the accounts, the flock almost certainly grazed extensively upon pastures not required for hay. During the second week of May ewes were washed and shorn by contract shearers, the lambs being shorn in August. The small pig herd included sows and boars of the popular Berkshire and Chinese breeds, which appear to have passed the greater part of the summer freely ranging around the farm. In late October the herd was yarded and fed upon a barley and bean based diet until the end of February. The fact that numerous weaned pigs were present on the farm each January suggests that contrary to the generally held view, surplus progeny were not slaughtered before the onset of winter. SALES FROM THE FARM In Table III, the percentage contribution of crop and livestock products to total farm sales is indicated, while Table IV sets out the mean percentage contribution of individual commodities to total sales between 1818 and 1822.
