of waste lands in the borough. Although roads A (later Brook Street) and G were set out in the Nant, the effects of the enclosure were most immediately evident in the Upper Green at the bottom of the Cwmdu brook, where several plots were allotted on either side of the turnpike (Smithfield Street) and the lower end of road B (New Street). Watering place 19 in Glynhafren Iscoed had been designated for public use and this and the adjoining river bed were gradually reclaimed so that the Gro as it was called became the only substantial piece of wasteland to survive in the borough. One of the first acts of the reformed Borough Council was to set up an Encroachment Committee in November 1837 to guard the rights of the public in what wasteland that remained, and in 1876 the council proposed to mark its boundaries with stones.11 By then the construction of a weir which had diverted the channel of the river to the left bank and the increased tipping of refuse and building materials were said to be restricting the supply of water to the mill and foundry, whose owner Mrs. H. Woosnam took legal action against the builder Richard Mer- edith in the courts at Shrewsbury.12 The accidental drowning of one William Lewis in November 1894 finally obliged the Council to fence the Gro embankment in 1895.13 TABLE 1 CILMACHALLT TOWNSHIP Roads Public Carriage Roads 30 feet wide A, B Private Carriage Road and Public Bridleway G 18 feet wide Private Carriage Roads 12 feet wide H, I, M, 0 Wells and Watering Place 8, 28, 32a Allotments to the Lord of the Manor One Fourteenth Part Sir Watkin Williams Wynn 29 Lower Green, 50 Upper Green Allotments to the Proprietors Mr. Richard Bennett 11 Lower Green Mr. Richard Cleaton 4 Nant, 12 Lower Green Mr. John Cleaton 33 Lower Green Israel Thomas Coleman 48 Upper Green Mr. David Davies, Pen y Dre 22 Lower Green Mrs. Elizabeth Davies 34 Lower Green Mr. David Davies, Currier 18 Lower Green Mrs. Eleanor Evans and Hugh Jones 9 Lower Green Mrs. Eleanor Evans 47 Upper Green Mr. David Evans of the New Inn 16 Lower Green Mrs. Jane Evans 20 Lower Green Mrs. Mary Evans 13 Lower Green Mr. John Howell 19 Lower Green Mrs. Hugh Jones 2, 3 Nant; 25 Lower Green Mr. Wm.
