CYLCHGRAWN LLYFRGELL GENEDLAETHOL CYMRU THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF WALES JOURNAL VOLUME XII. Summer, 1961. NUMBER 1. THE HALLS OF PEMBROKESHIRE, ANCESTORS OF BENJAMIN HALL, AFTERWARDS LORD LLANOVER OF LLANOVER AND ABERCARN (PLATE XII. 1-5) A brass tablet set up in 1871 in the nave of Gumfreston Church, near Tenby, Pembrokeshire, commemorates members of the families of Hall and Williams of Daisyback, in the parish of Gumfreston, from the time of Richard Hall, who was buried there on June 1st, 1779, aged 82. Little or nothing has been known heretofore of the genealogy of the Hall family earlier than the time of Richard Hall, and the available details of the life of Dr. Benjamin Hall, Chancellor of the Diocese of Llandaff, and his son, Benjamin Hall, M.P., the grandfather and father of Lord Llanover, were also scanty. In gathering material for a biography of Lord Llanover, I have been in touch with various descendants of different branches of the Hall family, who have kindly given me access to family papers and documents which have enabled me to trace Lord Llanover's genealogy back to the early sixteenth century, and have thrown some light on the life and character of Dr. Hall and his son. Among those to whom I am especially indebted, I must express my gratitude to the Hon. Mrs. Fflorens Roch of Llanarth, great-grand-daughter of Lord and Lady Llanover, and her husband, Mr. Walter Roch; Major John Berrington of Bettws Newydd, Monmouthshire, grandson of Lord Llanover's only sister; Mr. Robin Herbert of Llanover, great-great-grandson of Lord Llanover; the late Mrs. Bruce Anderson of Devizes, Wilts., great-grand-daughter of Richard Crawshay Hall, eldest of the five younger brothers of Lord Llanover; the late Mr. B. S. Stone, of Bovey Tracey, Devonshire, great-grandson of Richard Crawshay Hall; Mr. F. A. Browne, of Pretoria, South Africa, great-great-grandson of Richard Crawshay Hall; Mrs. B. E. Simson,' of Victoria, Australia, great-great-grand- daughter of Richard Crawshay Hall; Miss Hilda Kensington of Reading, Berkshire, grand-daughter of the Rev. Charles Ranken Hall, Rector of Shirenewton, Mon- mouthshire, third brother of Lord Llanover; Miss Gwendolin Hall-Jones of Bourne- mouth, Hants., niece of the late Samuel Hall of Cardiff and Tenby; and the late Mr. W. A. H. Fisher of St. Marychurch, Cowbridge, Glamorgan, who was descended from another branch of the Hall family.
