120 as continued to the present proprietors at Dolaucothi— which, taken in connection with what I have already stated, will prove, I trust, a further as well as perhaps a clearer aid to the solution of the problem so long before us. This short sketch of tabular pedigree of the modern Johnes family is as follows: — Thos. Johnes («J=Anne Powell (3) Thos. Johnes (VJ=EHz Knight (d) John Johnes (VJ=Eliz. Rees (/} I Daughters (g), (&), (i), (k) I Thos. Johnes (/)=Jane Johnes (m) John Johnes (o)=EHz. Bowenfa) I I Mary Anne (n) (q) (a) Thomas Johnes, de Penybont, in Caron, County of Cardigan, Esq., circa 1720, as previously noticed under Bowen's map, and who afterwards ,throuah grants or purchase, emerged from his cradle of Penybont to Llanfair Clydogau, in the county of Cardigan, and, finally, after the year 1745 to Dalaucothi, in the County of Carmarthen, where he then took up his residence, and where at this old mansion house he died in 1751. His last will and testament, hearing date 3rd day of June, 1749, was proved at the Carmarthen Probate Court 23rd December, 1751, by hit) second son, the executor, John Johnes, who thus in the partition of his estates became the second of the new family and race of Johnes, resident at Dolaucothi. In this will he leaves a bequest to a brother of his, James Johnes, of fifty pounds. [This James Johnes, as has already been very clearly shown, must not—from similarity of name through the said lapse from Jones to John«s in the previous owners of the Dolaucothi estate—be confused with, or taken to be one of that family, similarity of name being common enough in Wales as elsewhere.] (b) Anne, daughter and co-heiress to Jeremiah Powell, of Cwmeli, in the county of Radnor, which lady was stated to have been an heiress ultimately of consider¬ able wealth. (c) Thomas Johnes, eldest son and heir to the Radnorshire estate, who is mentioned in the will of his father as of Llanvair, and who ultimately became jure uxoris, of Croft Castle, where he resided, having been elected Member of Parliament for the County of Radnor. (d) Elizabeth, daughter and heiress to Richard Knight of Croft Castle, County Hereford, by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of feamuel Powell, of Stanage. (e) John Johnes, second son and executor undor his father Thomas Johnes' will. He was the possessor of the purchased Dolaucothi Estate, in the County of Car¬ marthen, where he resided and died in 1784.
