THE CAMBRIAN JOURNAL. ALBAN _!V 9 HEVIN (summer solstice.) THE RESTORATION OF ST. DAVID'S CATHEDRAL. The Cathedral Church of St. David is an ecclesiastical edifice with which are associated many reminiscences in¬ teresting to the feelings of "Welshmen, especially when its original foundation and endowment, together with its once prominent position as the seat of the Primate of the West, is taken into consideration. Having been originally founded by their own countryman St. David, and subsequently endowed by one of their native chief¬ tains, it became the mother church of an episcopal esta¬ blishment which included within its metropolitan pale no less than seven suffragans, namely, St. Asaph, Bangor, Hereford, Llanbadarn Fawr, Llandaff, Margam, and Worcester, over whom its Archbishop exercised spiritual jurisdiction, and ecclesiastical discipline. And as many as six-and-twenty Archbishops, among whom were several native Welshmen, renowned for their illustrious descent, profound learning, and devoted piety, are recorded to have filled the see before it ceased to be a primacy in the reign of Henry I., in whose ^ime it became subject to CAMB.
