Disc. 6, 1899. BYE-GONES. 251 NOTICES OF BOOKS. The Archceologia Cambrensis for October con¬ tains " Glimpses of Elizabethan Pembrokeshire," by the Rev James Phillips, " Slebech Coin- mandery and the Knights of St. John," by Mr J. Rogers Rees, and " Stokesay Castle," by the late Rev J. G. D. La Touche. It also contains a report of the fifty-third annual meeting in London, and amongst the Archaeological Notes and Queries are accounts of a bronze caldron found near Velin Newydd, Brecknockshire, an Inscribed Beam at Plas Penmynydd, Anglesey, a Dog- wheel at Cefn-Mabli, Glamorgan, an Ancient Welsh Farmhouse near Strata Florida, Early Sculpture at Ewenny Priory, and New Fishes for the Ffynnon-y-Sant,,Llanberis. The Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeolo¬ gical Society (2nd Series, XI., 3.) open with a paper on " Some Shropshire Briefs," by the Rector of Wem, being, as the writer says, chiefly a compilation from Mr Bewes's Church Briefs. Mr Henry T. Weyman follows with a contribution on the "Recorders of Ludlow," in which a list is given, followed by short biographical sketches. The late Mr George Morris's " Abstracts of the Grants and Charters contained in the Chartulary of Worabridge Priory " are continued, as well as " The Shropsbire;Subsidy Roll of 1327," with an introduction by "the Rev VV. G. D. Fletcher. The rest of the Part is made'up of an account of the annual meeting and the annual excursion. Readers interested in book plates will be glad to see the'announcement that the Rev F. R. Ellis is preparing a paper on " Shropshire Book Plates " for the Transactions, and he will wel¬ come any information on the subiect. With this Part subscribers have received the calendar of the Shrewsbury;,Borough Records, compiled by a special committee appointed by the Finance Committee of the Corporation, and also an index of archaeological papers published in 1897, being the seventh issue of the series and completing the index for the period 1891-97, published under the direction of th3 Congress of Archailogical Societies. It is much to the credit of the Shrewsbury Corporation that they should have published this useful and valuable calendar. Young Wales for October contains a portrait and biographical sketch of the late Mr Charles Ashton, and amongst the other con tents are " Edu¬ cation in Wales," a review by Professor T. Lewis, " the Development of the Agricultural Resources of Wales," by Mr Tom Parry, " Impressions of the Highland Mod," by Mr E. E. Fournier, M Ceiriog " (of whom it is stated that more of his eonga have been set to music than probably those of any other poet), by Mr W. Eilir Evans, and " Scenes from Welsh History," by Professor Edward Edwards, with two photographic illus¬ trations. Another paper is on "Admiral Rod¬ ney's Welsh Memorial." The writer repro¬ duces the inscriptions which Mr Parkes in 1803 sent to the Gentleman's Magazine, and asks whether they have been effaced by time, or whether Mr Parkes was drawing on his imagina¬ tion. Mr Parkes stated that under the inscrip¬ tion, " Colofn Rodney" these lines appear on the pedestal :— Y colofn uchaf a syrthiant Ar tyrrau cadarnaf Ond clod Syr Sior Brydges Eodney A cynnydda beunydd Ai enw da ni ddileuir; which is translated— The highest pillar will fall The strong towers will decay But the fame of Sir George Brydges Eodney Shall increase continually, And his good name shall never be obliterated. The Welsh, it will be seen, and the translation also, are inaccurate. D£0fcMB£& 6, 1899. ~"~~~~ NOTES. EXTRACTS FROM THE WORTHEN RE¬ GISTER.
