There is a strange fas¬ cination in possession, and now this long wished for desire has been fulfilled ; and Kingswood Home for friendless and fallen women is in existence. " I have often prayed that you might be saved," said Spurgeon's pious Congregational mother, "but I have never prayed for you to be a Baptist." "That's always God's way," re¬ turned the brilliant preacher. " He gives you a great deal more than you ask Him." This is our experience with regard to the Rescue Home. We asked and hoped for little things, a small home, to which half a dozen wretched women might repair for shelter, and instead a fine, large house, standing in its own beautiful grounds has become ours. Truly God has done for us great and mar¬ vellous things! But you ask, "Have any availed themselves of the shelter of Kings- wood?" The answer is cheering. Already some eight or nine girls have passed through the Home, and five are now within its walls. It is too soon to report success yet; but we know that hard hearts have been softened, that stubborn wills have been bent if not subdued; and there is more to follow. The question has been asked me lately by many: —"How can you account for the increased degradation of women ? How is it that we are confronted by problems that did not exist for our mothers and grandmothers?" I do not know the answer, and indeed am not certain of the truth of the statement.
