The lending library at the Roath Branch was formally opened to the public as an open access library on Wednesday, October 26th, at 7.30 p.m. Afterwards, Mr. Trevor Whitaker, a well- known Lancashire lecturer, delivered a delightful lecture on " The mainroads of North Wales and Shropshire." * * * » Lectures. The arrangements for the series of lectures during the winter in the branch libraries are almost complete. The list of lectures from October to December, with brief reading lists on the subjects of the lectures, is now ready, and may be obtained at the Central and branch libraries. * # * # Garden Cities and Town Planning. An important lecture will be delivered at the Canton Branch Library, on Friday, November nth, by Mr. Ewart G. Culpin, Secretary of the Garden Cities and Town Planning Association, on the above subject. The Association exists to promote the study of Town Planning in the United Kingdom, amongst other objects ; and it is through the kindness of the Association that the Libraries Com¬ mittee have been able to arrange this lecture. * * # * Other Lectures which will be delivered before the end of November are— " Natural Colour Photography," by Mr. Charles Kelly, at Splotlands, on Thursday, October 27th. For this lecture, the loan of a very fine series of lantern slides, in natural colours, has been secured. "The Wonders of the Moon," by Mr. Arthur Mee, at Cathays, on Thursday, November 10th. "A Peep into Nature through the Microscope," by Mr. E. Kent, at the Docks, on Thursday, November 17th. " The Ancient Greek Theatre and Greek Plays," by Professor Gilbert Norwood, M.A., at Roath, on Wed¬ nesday November 23rd. "Lapland and the Lapps," by Dr. Paterson, at Cathays, on Wednesday, November 30th. * » * # Travel Books. Some readers have already given in their names for Commander Peary's book, " The North Pole," which is now ready (K1826), and promises to be the travel book of the year. A new book by Dr. Sven Hedin, " Overland to India," will also shortly be published. Last year, the travel book most in demand was Sir E. Shackleton's "Heart of the Antartic,"
