THE WELSH CALVINISTIC METHODIST RECORD. OCTOBER, 1853. THE ATONEMENT. Tnis doctrine is the marrow of all gospel discoveries, the means of our redemption, the foundation of our reconciliation unto God, and the great hinge upon which are suspended our salvation, happiness, and eternal life. The sum of the gospel message is, " That Christ died for our sins ac¬ cording to the scriptures;" and no other ground than this have we for access unto God. In these passages we have Christ pointed out as the atonement, and a definition of the doctrine. The word used by the apostle Paul in the passage quoted from the epistle to the Romans, and translated " propitiation," signifies a propitiatory covering. In Heb. 9: 5, it is rendered mercy-seat: "and over it, (that 2d
