Oak and birch: I am very confident about these records. Willow: in this situation willow seems most likely, but aspen or black popular is also a possibility. Alder, hazel: I am reasonably confident that I have distinguished these two species correctly from each other, but could be mistaken in some samples. Rowan: this could possibly be a closely related species (e.g., whitebeam, apple, pear) but rowan seems the most likely in this situation. Unknown: likely to be another species, but too small or too distorted for identification. The samples from Cefn Caer Euni came from three different contexts. Series (a) came from the grey 'settlement' layer, various separate scatters. Series (b) was associated with the monument and both deposits came from the portal area of Cefn Caer Euni I. The charcoal from the pit itself was retained for possible C14 assay. Series (c) came entirely from beneath Cefn Caer Euni II and might reflect pre-monument activity.
